The French Siege of Paris: mitrailleuse with shields, 1871. The trench was followed up by tirailleurs, one battery of field artillery and one of mitrailleuses [machine guns] were pushed on along the railway, and a third force advanced from Clamart village. Against these the insurgents could not hold ground, and retired. From "Illustrated London News", 1871.
