Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of skeletal, or striated, muscle fibres. Each fibre consists of a bundle of smaller fibres called myofibrils, which are crossed by transverse tubules (horizontal lines) that mark the division of the myofibrils in to contractile units (sarcomeres). Skeletal muscle is under the conscious control of the brain.
