Illustration of the Prussian officer Friedrich von der Trenck (1726-1794) in prison at the fortress Magdeburg, Prussia. Von der Trenck was imprisoned in Magdeburg between 1753-1763 by Frederick the Great under suspicion of being a spy for the Austrians. The King ordered that he was to be imprisoned with his gravestone (shown on floor). He was manacled as he had previously escaped from the fortress of Glatz, where he was imprisoned from 1745-1746. From 'Les Prisons de l'Europe' by Jules Alboise and Auguste Maquet (1845).
