Illustration of Orthoceras sp. prehistoric nautiloid cephalopods. This cephalopod (similar to the modern nautilus, but with a straight shell) was a marine mollusc. It was carnivorous, seizing prey with its tentacle-like arms. Orthoceras dates from the Middle Ordovician, around 488 million years ago. Also seen is a eurypterid arthropod (light brown, lower left) and trilobites (darker brown, bottom left).
