Ancient galena (lead ore) mining complex Cabezo Rajao, Cartagena, Spain. Cabezo Rajao, meaning cracked head, was exploited by the Romans from around 200 BCE to 300 CE. It was an opencast mine, meaning the ore was extracted from the surface in open air pits. This method left an open scar in the earth, from which its name is derived. Over 40,000 slaves were used in the mining of Galena in this region.
