Side view of a brindled beauty caterpillar (Lycia hirtaria) resting on a stem of pure loosestrife in a garden habitat. The caterpillar is showing its ability to camouflage itself though mimicry as part of the plant. This species is a member of the geometridae family and is found throughout Europe, as well as parts of Asia as far east as Japan. The larval food plants are a wide range of deciduous trees. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in June.
