African mammoth (Mammuthus subplanifrons). Illustration and photo-reconstruction of the African ancestor of mammoths walking through the savannah. The African mammoth, is the oldest representative of the genus Mammuthus, appearing around 5 million years ago during the early Pliocene in what is today South Africa and East Africa, especially what is now Ethiopia. They already presented some of the unique characteristics of mammoths such as spiral tusks.
