Ghosts with whips and cow bells roam about the Austrian countryside with St Nicholas on 5th December 1957 Ghosts are roaming the countryside before and after the Holy Night . Saint Nicholas is accompanied by the Storhschabanner - heathen fellows , looking like wandering straw sheaves . They are cracking their whips to wake up the soil from hibernation .
