Desmid. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a desmid. Desmids are a common type of green algae and are usually found in freshwater. Most are single-celled and are divided into two symmetrical parts separated by a narrow bridge (isthmus). The shape of desmids is the basis of their classification.
