Illustration of the carnivorous dinosaur, Compsognathus. This was a genus of small theropods that lived during the Jurassic period, 150 million years ago, in what is now Europe. Only one species is known, C. longipes. It grew to about one metre in length, similar to a turkey, and weighed up to 3.5 kg. This slender, lightly built animal probably fed on small vertebrates such as lizards, and may also have eaten insects. Some paleontologists have speculated that it may have been covered in feathery integuments, but this interpretation assumes otherwise.
