E. faecalis exists as part of the normal flora of the human alimentary tract, but may cause infections in the urinary tract. It may cause bacterial endocarditis following gynaecological or genito-urinary surgery and also pneumonia. The bacteria is one of the so called superbugs, which are resistant to antibiotics in some stages of their development in the system of a patient.
