The "Carolina" Affair. In 1837; when part of Canada was in a state of rebellion; the American steamer Carolina (or as some historians give it; Caroline) was engaged in gun-running operations. As the local authorities were unable or unwilling to stop her; Colonel MacNab sent a small party led by Commander A Drew; RN to destroy the vessel. He managed to take her in a particularly dashing action; cutting her away from her moorings under the guns of Fort Schlosser. After removing her people; he set her on fire and let her drift over Niagara Falls; a huge blazing torch; the awe-inspiring sight of which had a great moral effect on the rebels and their sympathisers. Illustration for one of a set of 50 cigarette cards on the subject of Sea Adventure; issued by Hignett Brothers in 1939.
