Illustration of the Japanese physicist Masatoshi Koshiba (1926-2020). Koshiba constructed an underground detector in a zinc mine in Japan in the 1980s in order to detect neutrinos (subatomic particles) emitted by the Sun. The results of his experiment supported those achieved by Raymond Davis. Koshiba was awarded a third of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physics, along with Davis and Riccardo Giacconi, for his detection of cosmic neutrinos.
