Illustration of early Miocene (c.23-16 million years ago) France with extinct elephant-like deinotheres (Prodeinotherium sp.), three-toed horses (Anchitherium sp., centre) and a mongoose (Leptoplesictis sp.) in the foreground. Prodinotherium belong to the same order as elephants (Proboscidea), and likely resembled them, but with shorter trunks and tusks which grew downwards from the lower jaw. They lived between around 19 and 18 million years ago.
