Dividing cancer cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a cancer cell undergoing mitotic cell division. The cell is in telophase, the last stage of mitosis. Nuclear envelopes have formed around the duplicate chromosome sets creating two nuclei. The cytoplasm contains mitochondria. The two daughter cells are now only connected by a narrow cytoplasmic bridge containing the spindle apparatus (at centre), involved in chromatid movement. Cancerous (malignant) cells have escaped the normal controls on growth and division, and possess the ability to invade surrounding tissues. Magnification: x8000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
