Frederick Sanger (1918-2013), British biochemist and double Nobel laureate. In 1955 Sanger published the complete amino-acid sequence of bovine insulin, the first protein to be sequenced. It was for this work that he was awarded his first Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1958. He then went on to share the 1980 Nobel Prize for chemistry for his development of a method for sequencing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Sanger is the only Briton to have received two Nobel Prizes (as of 2019). Photographed at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK, in 1989.
