Cambridge, England - 22 July 2009; no people in view. Here we see the beautiful and distinctive carvings above the main entrance to St John's College, Cambridge. Founded in 1511 by the Tudor matriach of Lady Margaret Beaufort, the college's alumni include no less than twelve Nobel Prize winners, seven prime ministers, twelve archbishops, at least two princes, and three Saints. That's quite a track record... The main gate, shown here, is topped by the emblems and coat of arms of its founder, notably including the red rose of Lancaster. In case you think those two deer look a bit odd, you'd be dead right. In fact, they are mythological creatures - yales also known as centicores - mythical chimera beasts with elephants' tails, antelopes' bodies, goats' heads, and swivelling horns.
