American Of Japanese Ancestry Fire On German Snipers In Italy -- U.S. soldiers of Japanese descent fire a mortar into the hills on the Italian front, where German snipers are active. The soldiers belong to the famed 100th Infantry Battalion of the Allied Fifth Army, composed almost entirely of Americans of Japanese ancestry from Hawaii. Already cited far gallantry as a unit by U.S. Lieutenant Mark W. Clark, commander of the Allied Fifth Army, the 100th's soldiers have won nine Distinguished Service Crosses, 44 Silver Stars and three Logion of Merit Medals. One thousand of the battalions men have been wounded in action and now wear the Purple Heart decoration. September 15, 1944. (Photo by U.S. Office of War Information Picture).
