Palm oil plantations in Borneo, satellite image. Palm oil is used in a vast array of products. It is harvested all year round and is the most productive of the plants grown to produce oils. Various stages of deforestation are visible here, as farmers clear the rainforest to grow palm trees. The rectangular green patches are well-established palm oil farms. The light brown patches show newly-harvested land. Surrounding lush rainforest is visible in dark green. This level of deforestation, and the burning of cleared forests, is a key factor in species extinction, habitat loss, and climate change. This image was obtained on 15 February 2019, using the sensors on one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites.
