Various stages of deforestation are visible here, as farmers clear the rainforest to grow palm trees. The rectangular green patches are well-established palm oil farms. The light brown patches show newly-harvested land. Surrounding lush rainforest is visible in dark green. This level of deforestation, and the burning of cleared forests, is a key factor in species extinction, habitat loss, and climate change.
