V745 Sco nova blast wave, computer model. V745 Sco is a binary star system that consists of a red giant star and a white dwarf (yellow and white dots at centre). Periodic outbursts (novae) occur as material from the red giant is drawn to and falls onto the white dwarf. This three-dimensional (3D) computer model is based on X-ray observations of the nova that occurred in 2014. The model includes a large disk of cool gas (blue) caused by the white dwarf pulling on a wind of gas streaming away from the red giant. The nova's blast wave (yellow) and ejected material (purple) were concentrated along the north and south poles of the binary system. V745 Sco is 25,000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Scorpius. Image published in 2017.
