Claude Felix Abel Niepce de Saint Victor (1805-1870), was a cousin of Nicephore Niepce, the pioneer of photography. A captain in the French army, he was interested in the chemistry of the bitumen (heliograph) process developed by his cousin which, in 1855, he modified into the heliogravure method of photomechanical printing which gave good half-tone prints using coated steel plates. In 1847 he invented the albumen-on-glass process. Based on the ideas of the French physicist Edmond Becquerel, he managed to create natural-light colour images by the interference method. He continued with his research into photographic science until his death in 1870. Image published in 1859.
