Illustration of Edicaran fauna that lived 635 to 542 million years ago. This period of the Proterozoic era was characterised by the emergence of the first multicellular animals such as rangeomorphs (centre). They were frond-shaped species found in deep water eco-systems. The bilaterian proto-mollusc Kimberella (left) also lived during this period.
