Aerial photograph of the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant catchment dam, on the Coca River (Rio Coca) in eastern Ecuador. On 2nd February 2020 the Coca River eroded under the San Rafael Falls (formerly the highest falls in the country at 150 metres) 12 kilometres downstream from the dam. This led to rapid regressive erosion forming a steep gorge, heading upstream at a rate of up to 100 metres per day. The growing gorge destroyed oil pipelines, roads and forest and threatened bridges and other infrastructure. There are fears the developing gorge could reach this dam and cause a catastrophic collapse. The dam operators have denied that loss of sediment downstream due to the dam, which has been operational since 2016, contributed to the erosion of the bed beneath the falls.
