John Philip Holland (1841-1914), Irish-US submarine inventor, in the conning tower of the submarine Holland (later USS Holland), circa 1898-1899. Holland was an Irish nationalist whose passion for submarines was born of a desire to be able to attack the powerful British fleet. He developed the Holland VI in 1900, and sold it to the US government. It was 16 metres long and had a top speed of 8 knots (around 15 kilometres per hour).
