Cuneiform Babylonian tablet, 1st millennium BC. This grammatical text dates from the Late Babylonian era, and contains Sumerian entries in the left column and Akkadian translations in the right column. At the time this tablet was produced, the Sumerian language was already long-dead and the Akkadian language was increasingly being replaced by Aramaic. The script on this clay tablet is called cuneiform and was written with a pointed implement. When fired the records written on the clay became permanent. This object is part of the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, USA.
