Wildfire detected in Greenland, satellite image. Air temperature map of the Arctic, with dark red indicating highest temperatures. Greenland is at lower centre, with the dark red area on the western coast indicating the presence of a wildfire. The fire appeared to be burning in an area with mossy wetlands and heath shrublands, with warm dry conditions allowing the fire to start and take hold. This fire was extinguished a day after it started. Image generated by the GEOS (Goddard Earth Observing System) forward processing (GEOS-FP) model, which uses observations of air temperature, moisture, pressure, and wind speeds from satellites, aircraft, and ground-based observing systems. Data obtained on 10 July 2019.
