Fracture of the coccyx (red area), illustration. Also known as the 'tailbone', the coccyx is a set of fused vertebrae at the base of the spine. Fracturing the coccyx can be difficult to treat, typically involving rest and use of special cushions to reduce pressure on the area. If pain continues after the fracture has healed, then surgical removal of the coccyx (coccygectomy) may be needed.
