A satire on the resignation of John Stuart Earl of Bute (Prime Minister), Sir Francis Dashwood (Chancellor of the Exchequer), and Henry Fox (Leader of the Commons) . 'Excise' gleefully depicts the resignations as hangings. In 'Resignation' Bute's downfall is celebrated with a lewd poem alluding to the widely believed affair between the Prime Minister and Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales (George III's mother)
