Other ranks shako plate, 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot, gilding metal, 1855-1861.Plate die-struck in one piece: an eight-pointed rayed star with top point displaced by a Victorian crown.Raised in the centre of the star is a round Garter with Garter Motto in smooth lettering on a matt ground and with smooth edges.The Garter has a pendant tip with an ornate tag.Within Garter the centre is slightly domed and horizontally ribbed.In centre is the number, '40', in relief in Arabic numerals.On reverse is soldered a wire eyeloop fastening at one side.
