Beautiful Japanese promotional postcard for the Toyo Kisen Kaisha Shipping Company which ran services between San Francisco, China and Japan. The card shows Oishi Yoshio (1659?1703) - the chamberlain (karo) of the Ako Domain in Harima Province (now Hyogo Prefecture), Japan (1679 - 1701). Known as the leader of the Forty-seven Ronin in their 1702 vendetta and thus the hero of the Chushingura. Often referred to by his title, Oishi Kuranosuke - pictured here writing on the ceiling. Inset image of Arashiyama at Kyoto.
