The front page from 'The Mirror', 27th February 1836, with a picture of the then newly-built Abingdon Union Workhouse, Berkshire (now in Oxfordshire), featuring as part of an article of the Poor Law amendement act. Opened in 1835, it was designed by Sampson Kempthorne, and followed the hexagonal Y-Plan layout.
