Samoa - Hoisting the Union flag - 30th August, 1914. At the outbreak of World War One, New Zealand troops landed on Upolu unopposed on 29th August 1914 and seized control from the German authorities, following a request by Britain for New Zealand to perform their "great and urgent imperial service".
