On Sept 27 1918 the 35th Div attacked across this stream towards the hedge which marks the line of a Roman Road. 139th Reg & 140th Reg had to wade through the stream which was chest deep. Capt Harry S Truman was near here acting as a forward observer for his battery which was in Cheppy: "...the trees along the road had been strung with wire interwoven with brush and poles ten foot high .... On this side we were piling up, mixing platoons and companies, shooting at glimpses of movement, and heaving F-1 grenades over the hedge ... our men were tearing at the brush and poles with brute strength and jamming themselves into impossible holes."
