Tsaritsa Alexandra Feodorovna (formerly Princess Alix of Hesse) photographed with her four daughters in 1913; from left, Grand Princess Olga, Tatiana, Anastasia and Maria. Alix, her husband Tsar Nicholas II, their daughters and only son, the Tsarevich Alexei, were murdered by Bolsheviks in Ekaterinburg on 17 July 1918. On 20 August 2000 they were canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church.
