This illustration entitled the 'Scalp of Brian Connor' near Kilrush shows a man sitting in abject misery with no shelter. A 'scalp' was worse than a 'scalpeen' as it was merely a hole in the ground covered with some turf in which the most destitute sought shelter. Even here they were not left alone but hunted and evicted from these living graves. Many were left in roofless cottages during the time of the evictions in conditions worse than a pigsty. A figure of authority stands by the wall, a figure symbolising the authority by which such misery was visited upon tenant farmers.
