Composite image of the Gaia probe and the Milky Way Galaxy. Gaia is ESA's mission to create the most detailed three-dimensional map ever made of the Milky Way galaxy, It will chart a billion stars (about 1% of the stars in our galaxy) using 2 telescopes and three scientific instruments. Gaia was launched in December 2013 and went into orbit around the Langrangian point L2. On September 14, 2016, the Gaia mission released its first set of data from a year of scanning the sky.
