Spartan 207 satellite, (at center right), and the silvered Inflatable Antenna Experiment, (IAE), during deployment. The IAE is close to being fully inflated. The IAE was part of a program to develop space structures which are inflated like a balloon once in orbit. This is intended to reduce to weight of the equipment that has to be carried into space. The Spartan satellite provides a platform for short-duration scientific experiments. Viewed from the Space Shuttle Endeavor on 5/20/96, as part of mission STS-77, during which the Spartan 207 was deployed and retrieved. The IAE was ejected before Spartan was recovered.
