Faint constellations Octans (large triangular) and Apus (top) and the South Celestial Pole (plus sign at right). In the southern sky the celestial pole is not marked by any bright star (unlike Polaris which marks the north celestial pole). The southern pole is about one degree from faint magnitude 5.5 star Sigma Octantis (circular eye at right). it is barely visible to naked eye on a clear night. Sigma Octantis forms a notable trapezium-like asterism (right side) with its 3 naked eye neighboring stars which the main guide to find the pole.
