This map shows the distribution of subspecies of the lungless salamander Ensatina eschscholtzii. The subspecies are distributed in a characteristic "ring" shape. It is believed the species originated in Northern California and Oregon and extended its range south along both sides of the central valley, producing two lineages that, by the time they meet in the south no longer interbreed.
