Optical spectrum analyzer is a precision instrument that measures optical power as a function of wavelength. It is widely used as a powerful diagnostic tool in fiber optics, telecommunications (DWDM networks in particular) and fiber lasers. A model manufactured by Agilent Technologies (no brand name visible) is shown here to be measuring the amplified spontaneous emission spectrum at the telecommunications band around 1.55 micron wavelength.
