The smooth surface of the embryonic brain contrasts with the convoluted surface of the adult brain, made up of sulci (grooves) and gyri (ridges) of the cerebral cortex. During the seventh month of pregnancy, a relatively unwrinkled fetal brain becomes convoluted.
