Soufriere Hills volcano. Aerial view of a pyro-clastic flow entering the sea from the eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano. Ash is seen rising into the air from the eruption. This pyroclastic flow, a fast-moving stream of solid volcanic material, has followed the valley of the White River to the sea, and has created a new delta of volcanic sediment. The majority of this exposed area will probably be eroded by the sea in time. Soufriere Hills is a small stratovolcano (915 meters high) on the island of Montserrat. Its first activity was recorded in July 1995. Photographed on 2nd April 1997.
