Biotechnology. A technician operating a pilot scale commercial fermentation unit. Fermenters of this type are used to grow genetically engineered cultures of bacteria, viruses and microorganisms in bulk, at suitable temperatures and with the right mix of nutrients. Under these conditions the cultures can produce a maximum yield of product on a large scale. Substances such as interferon and monoclonal antibodies are produced in this way.
