Historic image of an anechoic chamber. "Accurate acoustical measurments require a room that is free from noise and reflecting surfaces, just as precise optical tests require a space that is free from extraneous light and reflections. This was the reason for the construction of the Bell Laboratories "Free Space Room," a 38 by 28 by 45 foot enclosure in which the absence of noise and freedom from reflecting surfaces simulates the acoustical conditions of unobstructed, unconfined free space.
