An Aldabra Tortoise, Aldabrachelys gigantea, at the San Antonio Zoo serves as an animal ambassador to thousands of school children each year. The only opportunity school children may have to see wildlife comes via visits to the zoo. Developing awareness and concern for wildlife is the central goal of education and outreach programs. The tortoises are from the islands of the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles. This species is one of the largest tortoises in the world.
