A New Zealand weta (cricket) Family Anostostomatidae, Hemideina crassidens, in temperate rainforest on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is in a defensive posture with the spiny hind legs raised and the mandibles open. It has stridulatory organs on the hind legs and abdomen and when it moves the legs over the abdomen they make a rasping noise. The tympanic membranes which are used for hearing can be seen on the front leg.
