Space shuttle Discovery (mission 51-A, the 14th shuttle mission) showing the retrieval of Palapa B-2, a stranded communication satellite. Astronauts Allen & Gardner wear manned maneuvering units (MMU), or motorised backpacks, which enable movement in space free of the craft. A second damaged satellite, Westar VI, was rescued & returned to earth for repair. Two communications satelites, Telesat H & Syncom IV-1 were deployed during this eight day mission (8th-16th November 1984). Two stinger devices, used to stabilize communications satellites before retrieval is possible, are visible at right. The one near the rear of the shuttle has already been used.
