Alexander Johnston Chalmers Skene (1837-1900), US physician. Skene was born in Scotland, moving to the USA in 1837. In 1863, he graduated in medicine from Long Island College Hospital, New York, USA. He specialised in gynaecology (disorders of the female reproductive system) and held professorships in his speciality at Long Island College Hospital and the Medical School of New York. He was also president of the American Gynaecological Society. His name is best known for Skene's glands that he found and described in the female urethra. This photograph was originally published in the American Journal of Obstetrics.
