Anatomy of the midbrain. Labelled anatomical illustration of the anatomy and structures of a part of the human brain called the midbrain (mesencephalon). This is below the outer cerebral cortex, but above the hindbrain. Functions controlled from here include vision, hearing, motor control, alertness and temperature regulation. Illustration from 'An Atlas of the Medulla and Midbrain' (1901) by Max Brodel and Florence Sabin. Sabin was a pioneering female scientist, who studied and taught anatomy and histology. Her full professorship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (1917) was the first achieved by a woman at a medical college.
