HENRY IV (1050-1106). /nHoly Roman Emperor, 1056-1106. Henry IV, excommunicated by Pope Gregory VII in 1076, is seen in this contemporary manuscript illumination at St. Nicholas' Chapel at Canossa in 1077 asking Matilda of Tuscany and the Abbot of Cluny to intercede for him with the Pope.
